Aanval iPhone App; Come and get it! http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/07/aanval-iphone-app-come-and-get-it/ http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/07/aanval-iphone-app-come-and-get-it/#comments Wed, 14 Jul 2010 06:55:11 +0000 moses http://www.loyalmoses.com/?p=491 First, what a huge relief it is to smoothly sail through Apple’s App review process and land an App in the App Store.

Aanval iPhone in the iTunes App StoreWe are extremely excited to have published the very first App of this kind, as well as firmly step once again, ahead of Aanval competitors by providing our customers and users with native iPhone and iPad access to live Snort and Syslog intrusion detection events.

Aanval iPhone is available in the iTunes App Store and is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

iTunes > Aanval iPhone direct link

Aanval iPhone functions for both the free limited version of Aanval as well as commercially licensed versions. It does require the latest release of Aanval 5.5 to function properly, so ensure you are up to date.

We have an extremely long list of features and enhancements planned for Aanval iPhone and customers should expect rapid updates over the next several weeks.

If you are a current Aanval user or customer, grab this little App and enjoy live event data on the go.

If you are not yet using Aanval… then go download and install it. It is available as a free single sensor version, or a fully licensed and supported commercial version.

Additionally, we sincerely appreciate all beta testers who took the time and effort to participate in testing Aanval iPhone prior to release.

Thanks again and enjoy.

Aanval iPhone App on its way! http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/07/aanval-iphone-app-on-its-way/ http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/07/aanval-iphone-app-on-its-way/#comments Tue, 06 Jul 2010 03:05:15 +0000 moses http://www.loyalmoses.com/?p=478 This isn’t the official announcement, but I wanted to drop a quick note and toss up some screenshots of the Aanval iPhone App that will be out of beta and released just around the corner.

With the release of this App, Aanval will be the first intrusion detection console / system with an accompanying iPhone / mobile device application.

Aanval iPhone will currently function on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, although a very advanced and highly specialized iPad version will be available later this year.

The App integrates into Aanval’s backend system and provides real-time access to snort and syslog intrusion and correlation data. This allows analysts and administrators to access intrusion data from the convenience of their mobile device.

Seriously… snort and syslog events right in your pocket. How cool is this?

Here are a few screenshots of the Aanval iPhone App

screen-shot-2010-07-05-at-62439-pm screen-shot-2010-07-05-at-62429-pm screen-shot-2010-07-05-at-62357-pm screenshot-20100705-181921 screenshot-20100705-181858 screenshot-20100705-181838 screenshot-20100705-181716 screenshot-20100705-181805

We are wrapping up a final round of beta requests and will be releasing a stable version shortly thereafter.

The initial version of the App will be quite basic, with the ability to very much only view live events and event details, however we have a full feature and product timeline already laid out for both the iPhone and iPad versions of Aanval.

Enjoy.

iPhone 4 poor signal quality with and without case http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/06/iphone-4-poor-signal-quality-with-and-without-case/ http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/06/iphone-4-poor-signal-quality-with-and-without-case/#comments Wed, 23 Jun 2010 23:32:40 +0000 moses http://www.loyalmoses.com/?p=473 Well as most have recognized and read about by now, the poor signal and call quality has very much to do with the metal band that wraps the iPhone 4 and is used as part of the antenna array.

This has been quite frustrating over the past 24 hours or more, so I thought to create a couple of quick videos to show the signal strength issues both with and without a skin / case.

Video example of iPhone 4 and poor signal strength

Notice how quickly signal strength disappeared… some calls I have received are dropped before the first words are spoken, other times it can be as long as a few minutes before the other party tells me they can’t hear me, then it’s dropped.

Video example of iPhone 4 with a 3GS case I had laying around

Signal strength remains at 3 bars, but at least it remains rather constant and is good enough for making calls and general purpose use.

In any event, this is not good for Apple and rather frustrating for us iPhone 4 users, and hopefully (fingers crossed) this is going to be an algorithm, calculation or some other issue that can be solved with a software update and not actually a defective hardware situation.

I’ll post some links to other sites with relative content to this issue here momentarily.

iPhone 4 with Real Racing http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/06/iphone-4-with-real-racing-in-hd/ http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/06/iphone-4-with-real-racing-in-hd/#comments Wed, 23 Jun 2010 08:02:09 +0000 moses http://www.loyalmoses.com/?p=467 Wanted to drop a quick thank you to Alex at Firemint for providing a promotional code for Real Racing…

I put together a quick little video recorded from a 3GS of some game play of Real Racing on the new iPhone 4. It’s pretty basic and I apologize in advance for the horrible glare and reflections… I am definitely not a cinematographer and my lack of natural ability in this theater is quite obvious.

Essentially, if you can’t say something nice… well, your mother probably told you the rest.

I’ve been told this will be the first gaming video on the iPhone 4, so ha! ;-)

Enjoy.

Xcode 3.2.3 and iPhone 4 running iOS 4 http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/06/xcode-323-and-iphone-4-running-ios-4/ http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/06/xcode-323-and-iphone-4-running-ios-4/#comments Wed, 23 Jun 2010 01:42:56 +0000 moses http://www.loyalmoses.com/?p=447 I’ve been very much waiting to get my hands on the iPhone 4… for a lot of reasons, but mostly to start pushing out some code on the new device.

After the excitement of this morning / afternoon (FedEx delivering the iPhone 4, 2 days early) and the craziness of snapping a dozen pictures and videos for all to see, I jumped into Xcode and pushed out some test App’s to the new iPhone 4.

Increased memory and processor along with the new screen makes for a fun new playground! :-)

And as you would expect, debugging and deploying to the new device went as smooth as it could have. Just a few clicks to kick the 3GS out of the system and we were deploying.

Now to get back to being productive and wrap up a beta of this Aanval iPhone App.

My iPhone 4 arrived 2 days early! http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/06/my-iphone-4-arrived-2-days-early/ http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/06/my-iphone-4-arrived-2-days-early/#comments Tue, 22 Jun 2010 18:45:01 +0000 moses http://www.loyalmoses.com/?p=394 Well, my iPhone 4 arrived 2 days early and caused a bit of buzz.

dsc05840As of last night my shipping status still showed a delivery date of the 24th even though I had received the email from Apple informing me of a possible early delivery on the 23rd.

Was quite surprised this morning when my wife handed me a box from FedEx and it said “Assembled in China” on the side. I was actually expecting a few other FedEx / UPS deliveries, but not the iPhone for 2 more days.

Regarding activation; I simply powered it on, plugged it in, punched in the requested details from iTunes and it was up and running in about 15 seconds. I was able to immediately make and receive calls within seconds of activation, which was quite surprising. I feel bad for those who received it but are unable to activate theirs. That’s brutal.

Thus far the screen is brilliant and clear and almost has a surreal feel to it, the display is so crisp it simply looks fake. The phone is extremely thin, feels hefty and the sharp corners seem to make it a little easier to grip.

As for performance, you’d expect me to say that it is extremely snappy… and well, I have to say that it really is. The whole family has had a turn on it since it arrived and we all feel the exact same. It actually feels very much over powered from a performance perspective, everything is quick and smooth.

Call quality thus far is pretty frustrating, I’m having wide swings from full signal to absolutely nothing with more than 5 dropped calls so far. Hoping this doesn’t continue.

Battery is quite impressive, my son played Jelly Car 2 for about 45 minutes or so and depleted a measly 8% of the battery.

In regards to heat, it does feel a little warm, like hand-warmer warm… nothing serious.

The rear facing camera, which is by far one of the most popular features is just incredible, the videos and snapshots below don’t do it justice… I’m not a photographer so it’s easy to see why they look so amateurish.

The camera display while taking snapshots and recording video is breath taking, colors are amazing.

Over all, super-impressed.

I’ll include a number of pictures and some video here and a few links to the blogs that are posting them as well.

A near mirror of my thoughts on Facebook http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/05/a-near-mirror-of-my-thoughts-on-facebook/ http://www.loyalmoses.com/2010/05/a-near-mirror-of-my-thoughts-on-facebook/#comments Sat, 08 May 2010 03:23:01 +0000 moses http://www.loyalmoses.com/?p=391 This year, my last few speaking engagements have had a good portion of Facebook related content… I expressed my lack of interest in Facebook due only to the simple fact that the Internet is more a tool or utility for me and less a social medium.

Some might have noticed that I do use Twitter on a pretty regular basis; I can defend against social network hypocrisy accusations as I use Twitter much like any instant messaging client. Twitter for me is tool that allows me to follow notable individuals and the happenings of my industry as well as communicate my likes / dislikes in a very informal manner. Much like I said above, Twitter for me is more of a tool or utility than a social medium.

moving on…

This WIRED article caught my attention; and nearly mirrors my exact thoughts on the service regarding control, manipulation and power over data. If you caught a few of my more recent speaking tracks, you’ll easily identify the parallels.
