Aanval v6 is now available!

Aanval v6 (Grendel) was released Thursday (12/03/10) morning. It represents more than 9 months of development and is a significant milestone in the long, nearly 7 year history of the snort & syslog correlation console.

As we’ve been commenting on over the past several months, Aanval v6 is a major interation and one we are sure greatly improves information security efficiency and security event management.

Although now would seem an appropriate time to catch up on sleep, we have a lengthy list of enhancements and features planned for v6 and will continue to aggressively roll out new builds following our release early, release often methodology.

The interface for Aanval v6 was completely re-written in Flex 4, scrapping the entire previous Flex 3 interface. The backend remains MySQL / PHP, however dozens of updates and optimizations were made to improve performance and stability.

Aanval is quite a large project, comprised of several hundred thousand lines of code. A major portion of time for this release was spent working on the interface (Flex 4). If you follow me on Twitter, you’d have witnessed a bit of my frustrations with the latest releases of Flash Builder (the unstable, Eclipse based pile of junk). But I’ll save all of that joy and excitement for another post.

A couple of more notable features of Aanval v6, besides the new multi-tasking interface are the GeoLocation displays and the re-introduced event correlation system.

GeoLocation with integrated Google Maps is now available in both real-time and search displays to provide a global, visual reference of event attack sources.
The event correlation system has been re-introduced with an updated interface to group and rank events that may be related to one another.

Aanval iPhone App; Come and get it!

First, what a huge relief it is to smoothly sail through Apple’s App review process and land an App in the App Store.

We are extremely excited to have published the very first App of this kind, as well as firmly step once again, ahead of Aanval competitors by providing our customers and users with native iPhone and iPad access to live Snort and Syslog intrusion detection events.

Aanval iPhone is available in the iTunes App Store and is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Aanval iPhone functions for both the free limited version of Aanval as well as commercially licensed versions. It does require the latest release of Aanval 5.5 to function properly, so ensure you are up to date.

We have an extremely long list of features and enhancements planned for Aanval iPhone and customers should expect rapid updates over the next several weeks.

Aanval iPhone App on its way!

This isn’t the official announcement, but I wanted to drop a quick note and toss up some screenshots of the Aanval iPhone App that will be out of beta and released just around the corner.

With the release of this App, Aanval will be the first intrusion detection console / system with an accompanying iPhone / mobile device application.

Aanval iPhone will currently function on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, although a very advanced and highly specialized iPad version will be available later this year.

The App integrates into Aanval’s backend system and provides real-time access to snort and syslog intrusion and correlation data. This allows analysts and administrators to access intrusion data from the convenience of their mobile device.

Seriously… snort and syslog events right in your pocket. How cool is this?

We are wrapping up a final round of beta requests and will be releasing a stable version shortly thereafter.

The initial version of the App will be quite basic, with the ability to very much only view live events and event details, however we have a full feature and product timeline already laid out for both the iPhone and iPad versions of Aanval.

Flex and AIR Consulting / Professional Services

Half empty. Time for a refill!

Within the last 10 days or so, I’ve been able to wrap up several small Adobe Flex and AIR projects and now have some availability for some interesting and / or unique opportunities. Let’s hear em’.

Regarding the Flex / AIR sector in general; I am still absolutely amazed at the shear number of Flex and AIR projects that are in search of developers for both consulting and long-term contract work. Although I pass on dedicated contract work, any new or experienced Flex developer has a near unending supply of opportunity to harvest from it seems.

Unique, technical or interesting projects of any type are of course a preference, however I also enjoy cranking out small or quick one-off solutions.

As I said above, let’s hear what you got!

Aanval v4.2 Released

FYI: As of version 4.1 Aanval is now a part of Tactical FLEX and no longer Remote Assessment.

Aanval 4.2 was recently released (Friday AM) and includes several major changes that fit the new ownership. See the release notes @ http://www.aanval.com/ for specifics.

Users of course will notice the new look / feel, which is much more business oriented and easier on the eyes.

For those who do not know what Aanval is, I’ve gratuitously included the product description below.

Unexpected response: Knol comment #1

In an earlier blog posting I mentioned that I gave Google’s Knol project a shot and posted a short summary on Adobe Flex.

I was surprised when the first comment I received was more or less an attack, rather than an editing suggestion or discussion on the actual topic.

It would be sad if Google Knol turned out to be an unfortunate, formalized news group where the battle of ego’s just gets better search relevance.

This is the comment received from one Michael Chaize:

“Thank you for this wonderful summary… but please remove the three links that are obviously there to generate traffic and not to show what Adobe Flex. Aanval and Tactical Flex are not the best Flex RIA I’ve met on the web… Really! And I am pretty sure that the redactor Loyal Moses is involved in these 3 applications. It really removes the trust a reader can have in this article.“

My response:

“Thanks for your comments Michael, this is precisely what makes Knol a wonderful new system.

Regarding Tactical FLEX, it is of course my company and Aanval is one of our products. Aanval was recently converted to Adobe Flex from primarily a PHP/AJAX architecture within the last several months, thus the reason for our excitement with the technology.

Anywhere.FM is simply a good example of Flex at work. There are as you already know, many good examples of Flex products and services, and this is why I included the Flex.org link to the very popular showcase.

I do have to point out, that the Knol does not in any form imply or make claims that any of the links or content provided is “the best” as you mentioned above. This is simply false.

As for trust, Google Knol is exciting as it provides a mechanism for perspective on topics while providing credibility through verification. I am in fact Loyal Moses, and as such, readers should know that although I attempt to remain as objective as possible, I do however have opinions, likes and dislikes and enjoy speaking of them.
